“I can’t pick what to do on your birthday. That’s blasphemous,” I insist. “You have to pick.”

“You haven’t explored much since you got here, so you have to call the shots. I’m just your lowly tour guide,” Madi teases, sauntering into the living room as she pulls a black shirt over her head.

“We can do anything?” I raise my voice an octave.

She narrows her eyes and smooths the wrinkles of her shirt down over her lean waist. “Do you really want to stay in bed during your one morning off?”

“If you’re in the bed, yes. It would be better than any view, museum, or crowd in Times Square.” I shrug, meaning every word.

“Well, there will be plenty more time for us later.” She tilts her head. “What’s the one thing you’ve been wanting to do since you got here?”

Her lavender scent washes over me, and I lick my lips as I try to focus on the question. I’m not one for sightseeing when I go to new places. I prefer to simply see how the locals live. To shop like they do and try unique restaurants or food trucks.

It’s another reason I liked the Italian place so much—it wasn’t exactly a hot spot for tourists, but the food was incredible.

On top of that, I also went jogging with Madi once through swarms of people as we raced toward the nearest park from her apartment. That was a near-death experience I never thought I’d have. One woman tried to claw at me because I accidentally bumped into her purse. I never even touched her.

But it felt like a true New York experience.

I sift through ideas of what I’d like to do since it’ll make her happy, and when I finally have a lightbulb moment, I hold my finger up. “Actually, there is one thing…”

“Let’s hear it.” She stalks toward the door and grabs her sinful combat boots.

“I want a Nathan’s hot dog.”

She drops a booted foot to the floor with a thud and raises up. “That’s it? A hot dog?”

I nod. “One from those carts outside.”

She shakes her head as a slow smile spreads. “Put your shoes on, Ian. We’re going to Coney Island.”
